Nancy has been an artist for 40 years. She went to a commercial
art school in Cleveland, Ohio with a major in fashion and a second major
in portraiture. She worked as a commercial illustrator for newspaper
advertising for about 15 years. She began to develop her fine art ability
when she quit commercial work to raise a family.
For the first 30 years of her career she worked in pen
and ink, but always felt that the medium limited her ability to create
as she wanted to in fine art. About 10 years ago she discovered colored
pencil, a medium newly accepted to the fine art world, and "fell in
love". She found that colored pencils finally gave her the subtlety
and softness she had been searching for.
Nancy is a signature member of CPSA (The Colored Pencil
Society of America), has shown her work in many national shows, has
work in three books called The Best of Colored Pencil III, IV, V, and
one called Portrait Inspirations. She recently exhibited a large show
(65 pieces), entitled We are all One which consists of multi-cultural
portraits.
Focusing her attention on almost anything that catches
her eye, literally from the African bush to the lazy backwaters of Raritan
Bay, her paintings reflect her training as a classical portrait artist
and her hard-won experience in New York's advertising community. But
beyond either influence, Nancy's gift for intimate portrayal suggest
a life-long love affair with her craft and subjects. Closer to home
Nancy spends considerable time on commissioned portraits of people and
pets.
For the future, Nancy would like to return to Africa on
a second photo safari and hopefully visit the Australian Outback in
search of new subject matter.
